Thomas J. Szmaciasz, 91, of Clifton, passed away on October 21, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Thomas was born in Garfield and lived in Clifton for the past 68 years. He served his country in the Navy during World War II and was an active member in many religious and civic organizations. He was a long-time parishioner and usher at St. John Kanty Church, as well as a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a founding and charter member of the church's Golden Circle where he served as its first president. A man of many pursuits, Thomas was a former president of the Pattern and Model Makers Union and enjoyed singing with the Chopin choir. He chaired many successful functions for the Knights of Columbus, an organization he supported for 45 years. He was recognized by the affiliated Regina Mundi 3969 Columbian Association for his dedication as Treasurer, having held the office for 11 years until 2012. He was also active in the Athenia Veterans Post for 40 years where he organized many events, and was a member of American Legion Post 8. He is survived by Jeanette, his beloved wife of 68 years, by his daughters Janet Kempf and her husband Paul of West Chester, PA, Carol DeVisser and her husband Daniel of Kinnelon, Marian Bell and her husband Ronald of Wayne, and Susan Delancy and her husband Michael of Medford; seven grandsons, Scott Kempf; Kristopher and Trevor DeVisser; Brian, Matthew and Jacob Delancy; and Ryan Bell; and two great-grandsons, Jackson and Logan Kempf. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Ziemba and her husband Anthony of Toms River, as well as ten nieces and nephews. Thomas was predeceased by his sister Sophie Sarisky and his brother Frank. Visitation is Sunday 2-6 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Funeral Monday 9 AM at the funeral home and 10 AM at St. John Kanty RC Church, 49 Speer Ave., Clifton.
