Theodore C. Janeczek, 92, a lifelong resident of Passaic, New Jersey, passed away Tuesday, January 28th, from natural causes. A graduate of Don Bosco Preparatory High School, in Ramsey, NJ, Ted was one of the school's famous "Ironmen," dubbed with the title for their tireless schedule and unparalleled success on the basketball court. Ted was a multiple time All Bergen County recruit, and is a member of the Don Bosco Sports Hall of Fame. The Ironmen won the New Jersey State Championship in his sophomore year. Ted attended Villanova University, where he was a member of their varsity basketball team. He ultimately graduated from Columbia University, but not before serving his country as an airplane mechanic in the Army-Air Force in the 864th Bomber squadron, spending the majority of his time in the South Pacific (Palau and Okinawa). After graduation Ted was appointed City Treasurer of Passaic, a position he proudly held for many years before becoming the first Passaic City Manager in 1971. He presided during a time of significant social unrest, and did so with dignity and respect. Above all, he was a man of professional and personal integrity. Ted later left the public sector to join New Jersey Bank (now PNC) as Vice President of Municipal Finance, a position he held until he retired in 1983. An avid golfer, he had three holes in one during his lifetime, all at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, NJ, where he was a past president, treasurer and board member. Ted worked to give back to his community, serving on the Board of Directors for Passaic General Hospital, Passaic Boys Club, and The United Way of Passaic County. He was also a longtime parishioner of St. John Kanty Church in Clifton, NJ. A truly dedicated family man, Ted is survived by his wife of 65 years, Josephine (Sloma) and three children Theodore R. (Jane Leader) of Hershey, Pa.; Dorothy Escobar (Augustin) of Weston, FL, and Mary Ann Watt (James) of Essex Fells, NJ, as well as his nine grandchildren - Alex, Meredith (Mills), and Andrew Janeczek; Christine (Matusek), Alicia, and Raymond Escobar; and Caroline, Julia and Katherine Watt. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Anna Janeczek as well as two brothers, Edward and Raymond. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity in Ted's name. His life will be celebrated at 11 AM Saturday, February 1, at St. John Kanty Church Avenue, 49 Speer Avenue, Clifton, NJ. Friends and family are welcome to visit beginning at 9 AM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. www.ShookFH.com
