Shirley Hyler, 90, of Nutley, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Born and raised in New York City to Joseph and Bessie Reichman, Shirley went on to build a beautiful life with William Hyler, whom she married in 1956. Together, they raised five children in North Arlington and Kearny. Following 34 years of marriage, William sadly passed away in 1990.

Shirley later found companionship and great happiness with Gilbert Burgess, whom she married in 2006 and together made a home in Nutley for the remainder of her years.

A compassionate caregiver, Shirley worked as a nurse for nearly five decades, caring for her community at West Hudson Hospital, private medical practices, and Queen of Peace High School. Above all, she treasured time spent with friends and family.

Her memory will be cherished by her husband, Gilbert; her children, Suzanne, William, Jennifer, Michael, and Joseph; her sister, Wendy Schottenstein; her nine grandchildren, Michael, Jamie, Sarah, Skye, Christopher, Caroline, Trulee, Elizabeth, and Emma; and great grandchildren, Matthew and Brody. Shirley was predeceased by her siblings, Nathan Reichman and Jacqueline Flathman.

Shirley was laid to rest at Menorah Cemetery in Clifton, New Jersey. Funeral services were held privately.
