Peter Nolan Tuom ey Sr. passed away Friday May 31 st , 2019 at his home in Clifton NJ. He was 83 years old. A proud US Army Veteran, Peter was born in New York City and grew up in Cold Spring, NY . Son of Cornelius and Kathleen (Brooks) Tuomey, h e was the you ngest of five boys, with brothers Cornelius Jr., Christopher Brooks, James, and Stephen Tuomey.
Known for his intellect, h umor, kindness, and generosity, Pete graduated from Haldane High School at 16 and went on to serve in the US Army at 18 for two years. After his service he attended Pratt Institute studying industrial engineering. He held a variety of positions b efore answering an ad in t he New York Times for a job on the Comex in 1967 . Peter thrived in the frenetic atmosphere of the metals markets and rose quickly to become a partner of Floor Broker Associates. He was a senior partner in the firm until his retirement in 1987 .
His antics and generosity were legendary. Sharing in success was his natural inclination. I n 1979 after a good day trading he hopped a subway to 42 nd St reet and handed a substantial check to Covenant Hous e. This was the impetus for one of his proudest achievements as the founder of the Commodity Exchange Center Childr en's Fund (CEC Children's Fund, later Futures and Options for Kids ) . Thirty years and 30 million dollars later the charity helped thousands of children through a variety of programs in the New York Tri-State region.
He resided in New York City, Jackson Heights Queens, and raised his family in Montclair NJ before settling in Clifton .
Peter was an avid golfer for many years and served as a director of the Hamlet Development Corporation and a founding member of the Adios Golf Club in Florida. He was often accompanied in his adventures (golf and beyond) by his close friend the renowned bagpiper Joseph Brady Sr .
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Elean or ( Sandell ) Tuomey , his c hildren Ann Michel Tuomey, Peter Nolan Tuomey Jr., Charlotte Eleanor Tuomey and her partner Gabriel Cruz, in addition to his foster sons and their children; Truong and Thao Dang , their sons, Nolan, & Hansen, Luong and Van Dang, their children, Kevin & Ann , his brothers Cornelius Jr., and Stephen, sister-in-laws Vera and Jan Tuomey.
Memorial Gathering Friday, June 7, 2019, 5-8 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Memorial Mass Saturday, June 8, 2019 10:00 AM at St. Andrew the Apostle RC Church, Clifton. Cremation was private. If desired, donations made in Peter's memory to Sacred Heart RC Church, Camden, www.sacredheartcamden.org/, or to Covenant House New York, www.covenanthouse.org/, would be greatly appreciated.
