Rev. Dr. Peter H. Carey, Jr., 82, of Wallington passed away on September 1, 2021. Born in Passaic at St. Mary's Hospital on April 26, 1939 to Peter H. Carey, Sr. and Emma Carey (Miller), Peter grew up in Clifton, graduating Clifton High School in 1957.  He received his Bachelor's degree from Bloomfield College and continued his love of books, reading and expanding his education at Drew University receiving his Master of Theology and Doctorate of Divin i ty.

Peter was ordained as Protestant Chaplain at the Passaic General Hospital (now known as St. Mary's General) in 1980 and has remained Chapl a in there for the past 41 years . He was called as Pastor to th e Wallington Presbyterian Church in 1983 and continued to serve the church as Pastor until his death. At WPC, Rev. Carey organized and presided over Bible Study and bereavement support groups. He worked in Hospice Care both in South Jersey and at Beth Israel Hospital in Passaic. He founded Journey to Grief in Clifton and Passaic, overseeing the Parish Nursing Interfaith & Outreach program since 1994.

Rev. Carey also served as Wallington Borough Fire Chaplain and was called upon frequently to lead many civic functions in prayer.

Prior to moving to Wallington as Pastor , Peter worked as a letter carrier for the Clifton Post Office for 25 years before retiring.

Beloved husband for nearly 61 years of Margaret (Burns). Devoted father of Mary e llen Lavery and her husband E dward, of Denville. Loving PopPop of grandson Patrick Lavery and his wife Kristen, of Flemington, and granddaughter Martha Lavery , of Astoria, NY. Dear brother of Patricia Presing , of Lyndhurst. Beloved Uncle of many and a faithful friend to everyone he met.

Visiting Monday 3 – 7 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Funeral service Tuesday 10 AM at the Wallington Presbyterian Church, Paterson Ave., Wallington.
