Mary (Sousa) Costa, 93, formerly of Clifton, passed away on February 29, 2016 at the Regional Hospice, Danbury, CT. Mary was born in Lowell, MA, on June 3, 1922 to Conceicao and Manuel Sousa. She was brought up on Madeira Island, Portugal and lived in Clifton for most of her adult life, before moving to Southbury, CT, in 1988.
During WW II, Mary worked in a radio factory and then as a sewing machine operator until she became a full-time homemaker. Her favorite pastimes were Bingo, playing slots in Atlantic City with Jimmy, and knitting. Family members continue to use and cherish the beautiful cable-stitch sweaters and her lovely afghans. Mary was an excellent cook, and though many tried, no one could duplicate her special chicken recipes.
Mary was predeceased by her devoted husband Vincent "Jimmy" Costa in 2000, a sister Connie John, and two brothers Louis and Arnold Sousa. Beloved mother of Anna Marie Bateman and spouse Howard of Wantage, and Anita Adzima and spouse Larry of Southbury, CT. Loving grandmother of Christopher Adzima, Jennifer Ciuffo and spouse Ryan, Marisa Bateman and companion Ben Dickinson, James Bateman and spouse Jeremie, and Megan Adzima.
Funeral Saturday 10:30 AM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Entombment, St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hackensack. Visiting Friday 4-7 PM at the funeral home.
