Obituary

Madeline (Menegus) Maier, 89, of Clifton, completed her life's mission and was called to eternal peace on June 20, 2015. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Madeline began her 25 year teaching career in the Clifton schools as a teacher of Home Economics at School No. 13, and after an 18 year absence to raise her family, she resumed teaching, first at Columbus, then Woodrow and later at CHS. For 25 years, Madeline brought to her students knowledge and enthusiasm that extended well beyond the classroom. She organized fashion shows to highlight student-designed and constructed garments, including The American Woman Bicentennial Fashion Show in 1976, for which students researched, designed and constructed period clothing from Puritan to modern times. While at CHS, Madeline established a food service course that included a work-study internship for students seeking a career in this industry. Madeline will long be remembered for the many extraordinary costumes she single-handedly created, first for productions at WWMS and then CHS, including Hello, Dolly! Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. During her absence from teaching, Madeline worked for her parish, St. John Kanty, R.C. Church and School, where her many volunteer projects included helping to establish and fully catalog a school library, and serving as P.T.A. President and Brownie Leader. Madeline was always quick to volunteer her help and share her talents with so many, especially with her family to whom she was absolutely devoted. Her husband, William (Bill), who predeceased her in 2011, use to quip that Madeline not only had 7 children, she had 7 only children, as she recognized each child as a special and unique individual and worked tirelessly to nurture the talents and interests of each. Her most fortunate and grateful children remain: Mary Elizabeth (Don) McClure, William (Mary) Maier III, Madeline (Jack) Lorentz, Patricia Maier, Robert (Lynda) Maier, Margaret Maier and Karen Maier (John) Schwarz; along with 11 grandchildren: Matthew McClure, David McClure, Timothy Maier, Katherine Maier, William Lorentz, Mark Fuller, Anne Fuller, Sandra Maier, Gregory Maier, Emily Maier and Imogene Schwarz; and 3 great-grandchildren: Reese McClure, Lucas McClure and Zacharias Fuller. Madeline is also survived by her siblings, Raymond Menegus, Rita Foti and Eileen Debesis, with two siblings having predeceased her, Robert Menegus and Antoinette Shoemaker. Madeline will long be remembered for her enthusiasm, optimism, dedication, determination and selflessness. Throughout her life, Madeline was an extraordinary educator, motivator, and most of all, best friend. She will be sadly missed. A memorial mass to celebrate her life will be offered on July 25, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. John Kanty RC Church.
