Leonard Lee "Lenny" Harris, 58, passed away at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lyons, NJ on Saturday, January 25, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born December 26, 1955, he was one of six children born to the late Cleophas "Cleo" Harris and his beloved wife, Mrs. Dorothy Mae (Foster) Harris. Leonard was raised in Passaic, NJ and attended Passaic High School before he enlisted in the United States Army. He later became a resident of Newark, NJ. Leonard was a spiritual man who enjoyed reading the Bible, spreading its word and his personal testimony, to those who were struggling with their own paths. He loved to listen to gospel music, interacted with friends and family on social media, shared pastimes of his youth, and enjoyed an unlimited supply of his favorite soda - Orange Crush. He was the essence of devotion, courage, modesty, forgiveness and generosity, which remained steadfast until he was called home. Leonard is survived by his four children, Tamara Gary, Tamika Gary, Ramada Harris and Kareem Dawson; his two brothers, Cleo Harris, Jr. and Michael Harris; his sister, Darleen Harris; his grandchildren, nieces, nephews; and longtime companion, Vanessa Leonard. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, Cleophas "Cleo" Harris and Dorothy Mae (Foster) Harris; his sister, Margelene "Margie" (Harris) Bride; and his brother, Mark L. Gene "Brau" Harris. Services will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 8:00 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, with Pastor Angelo McCutchen officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit on Thursday from 6 - 9 PM. Cremation will be private. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Veterans Administration Medical Center's Hospice and Palliative Care Center for their support in his final days.
