Obituary

Mr. Kamalakar Vasudeo Narsule, who was known to friends and family as Kamal, 83, of Belleville, NJ, died on Friday evening, June 21, 2024 at Mountainside Medical Center due to complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Born on June 12, 1941, at Wadia Hospital in Parel, Bombay, he was the son of the late Vasudeo Gangaram and Tillotama (née Shirodkar) Narsule.

He graduated from the University of Bombay with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

He and his wife of 50 years, Kavita Narsule (née Gadkar) were married on May 4, 1974 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. They later immigrated to the United States in 1976, and he became a US Citizen in 1983.

He started his engineering career in India with Mapco Corporation focusing on cold storage systems, and later at Vulcan Laval, Ltd., in support of dairy manufacturing. After immigrating to the United States, he worked as a mechanical engineer first for Ebasco Services at the World Trade Center, followed by IBM at its East Fishkill facility, and then as a consultant engineer on contract for several companies including Raytheon, NBC, Schindler Elevators, Lockheed Martin, Bristol Meyers Squibb, and finally the Port Authority of NY and NJ.

His hobbies were numerous, and he took advantage of them as a means to save money for his family to survive and thrive in America. He enjoyed carpentry and built most of the furniture in his home. He loved personally maintaining and repairing his cars and their engines, and rarely used mechanics. He was an amazing cook of both Indian and American cuisine. He was also notably handy at plumbing and electrical work, and even upgraded his home's oil-based steam heat system with a gas furnace all by himself just because he could.

He was a hero to his only son, and enthusiastically was his lifelong tutor in engineering-related subjects such as chemistry, physics, calculus, and strategic planning (even on a very last-minute basis, like during car rides to school and literally just minutes before his son's exams).

Moreover, he was a nice guy who enjoyed walks with his wife, watching sports, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dr. Chaitan Narsule and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Stevenson, of Arlington, MA; his two grandchildren, Luke Stevenson Om Narsule and Anna Tillotama Stevenson Narsule; his older sister, Pramila Kerkar; his younger sisters Lata Nair and her husband, Sadasiv, Meena Naik and her husband, Prakash; his younger brother Ashok Narsule and his wife, Sulata; his brothers-in-law Ashok Gadkar, Anant Gadkar and his wife Bhakti, and Ramesh Gadkar and his wife Sucheta; his sister-in-law Nandini Desai and her husband, Arun; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who he loved very much.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Chandrakant Narsule, and his brother-in-law, Dilip Kerkar.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 9:00am to 11:00am at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton, NJ. Cremation, in accordance with the Hindu tradition, will follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, 255 Main Ave., Clifton.
