John T. Smith, 64, of Newark, passed away on March 28, 2014. Born in Newark, he was raised in East Hanover and lived in Garfield before returning to Newark last year. A parishioner of Assumption of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church, Clifton, John was a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service in South Hackensack for 18 years, retiring in 2000. John was a Model Train Collector and was learning to speak Portuguese. Former husband of Phyllis Smith. Beloved father of Michael Chanda of Manahawkin, Doreen Chanda of Garfield, James Chanda of Hillsborough, Michael Smith of Roanoke, VA, Susan Smith of Garfield, and Rebecca Manzo of Ridgefield Park. Dear brother of Maureen Smith of East Stroudsburg, PA. Loving grandfather of 8. Funeral Thursday 9 AM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, and 10 AM at Assumption of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church, Clifton. Interment, East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton.
