John R. Mattern, 85, of Garfield, passed away on July 1, 2025, Born in Hoboken, he lived in Jersey City and Louisiana before moving to Garfield several years ago.

A US Air Force Veteran, John worked for Maxwell House Coffee in Hoboken for 28 years, and was a member of the American Legion Post #109, Rutherford. An avid Golfer, John played cards at the American Legion Post in Rutherford, was a member of the Bergen County Dart Club, enjoyed Hunting and Fishing, and was a member of the Secaucus Bocci League.

Beloved husband for 62 years of Edna Ruth (Williamson) Mattern. Devoted father of Debbie DeRobertis and her husband Nick, John Mattern and his wife Nancy, Richard Mattern and his wife Doreen, and Jo Lynn Schmidt. Loving grandfather of Kaytlin, Tyler, Samantha, Michelle, Kristina, Kirsten, Jenna, Allison and Lynsey. Cherished great grandfather of Michael and Alivia.

Visiting Thursday, July 10, 2025, 4-8 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton.  Funeral Friday, July 11, 2025, 10:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by Military Honors. Cremation will be private.
