Obituary

John S. Hutnyan of Bloomfield fell asleep in the Lord peacefully at home on Friday evening, November 4, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was 93.

Born on August 15, 1929 to John and Marie Hutnyan in Forest City, Pennsylvania, John grew up on a dairy farm. As an avid learner he started his education in a "one-room schoolhouse." During the Great Depression, he moved with his parents to Passaic, NJ where he graduated from high school in 1947. John studied chemistry at Scranton University until he was called to serve our country as a member of the United States Air Force 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing during the Korean War from 1948-1952. He was discharged from the USAF at the rank of Sergeant, returned to New Jersey, and completed his chemistry degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1954. John went on to work at The Okonite Company as a Senior Research Chemist until his retirement in 1994.

On November 27, 1954, John married the love of his life, Anne Hruby, at Three Saints Orthodox Church in Garfield, NJ. Anne had grown up only two farms away from John in Pleasant Mount, PA, but their love story did not begin until John returned from Korea.

His life was centered on faith and family. As a devout Orthodox Christian, John was an active member of Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in Paramus, NJ for many years, serving on the parish council, singing in the choir, teaching church school, and grounds keeping. At the time of his repose, John was a parishioner of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Wayne, NJ. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, history, crossword puzzles, hunting, fishing, gardening, metal detecting, and sharing his vast knowledge with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his beloved and devoted wife Anne of 68 years, John is survived by his three children—John [Marilyn] Hutnyan, Patricia Hutnyan Geeza, and James [Gale] Hutnyan; six grandchildren—Melissa [Elliot] Joseph, Allison [Eric] Martinez, Alexis [Paul] Tewfik, Danielle Geeza, Julianne Hutnyan, and Stephen Hutnyan; and four great-grandchildren—Alexander, Gemma, Jackson, and Jesse.

Visitation and services will be held at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, 285 French Hill Road in Wayne, NJ. On Wednesday, November 9, visitation will be from 1-4 PM and again from 6-9PM with a Funeral Service beginning at 7 PM. On Thursday, November 10, all are welcome to meet the family at 11:30 AM at SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, 2105 Belmont Turnpike in Union Dale, PA for the final Panikhida Service and interment. A meal will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's name to Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, 285 French Hill Road, Wayne, NJ 07470.
