ean (Coschignano) Czerniecki, 80, of Clifton passed away on September 30.
Born in Paterson to Frank Coschignano and Isabella (Betty) Coschignano (Spinelli), she was raised in Little Falls and attended Passaic Valley High School. She earned her BA in Social Studies, English and Latin at Montclair State College in 1958, where she was awarded the Citizen of the Year. That year, she returned to Passaic Valley HS as a history and Latin teacher. There, she met her husband, Gene (1936-1980). She left teaching temporarily to raise her family and after a six-year hiatus began a 32-year career at St. John Kanty School teaching fourth grade, and then eighth grade as well as serving as Assistant Principal. Jean was recognized as the Paterson Diocesan Teacher of the Year in 1996.
In addition to teaching at the school, Jean also taught CCD to confirmation candidates for ten years. She and her husband Gene also served as an instructing couple in St. John Kanty's Pre-Cana program. She served as a member of the St. John Kanty Church Parish Council and the Finance Committee. She was also a Eucharistic minister at the church. Although she retired from full time teaching at the school in 1998, she continued work as a substitute teacher at St. John Kanty School and at St. Andrew's School for many years. While still active as a teacher, she also taught night classes to GED students at Passaic High School. She served as a GED teacher for 21 years, retiring in 2016.
Jean was married to Eugene Czerniecki from 1959 until his death in 1980. She is survived by her sister, Dolores Harrington of Mercer Island, WA and by her four children and eight grandchildren: son Brian Czerniecki, his wife Cindy Czerniecki of Tampa, FL and their daughters Bryn and Abigail; daughter Susan C. Wigley, her husband Michael Wigley of Bethany Beach, DE and their son Austin and daughter Carson; son David Czerniecki and his wife Christine Ratti Czerniecki of Bernardsville and their children Ethan, Mariel and Marshall; and by her daughter Jeanna C. Velechko, her husband Scott Velechko of Glen Ridge and their son Harrison.
Funeral Wednesday 8:45 AM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, and 10 AM at St. John Kanty RC Church, Clifton. Interment will be private. Visiting Tuesday 3-8 PM at the funeral home.
