James Vincent Scangarello, of Clifton, passed away on April 18 just a few weeks away from celebrating his 10
0
th birthday in June. Born in Garfield, New Jersey, he has been a resident of Clifton for
all
of his life.
On April 28, 1946, he married the love of his life, Angeline (Messineo)
.
James was predeceased in death by his wife of 67 years in 2013, by his parents Frank and Nunciatta Giordano Scangarello, by his brothers, Frank, Joseph, John, Thomas, twin brother Peter and his sisters, Josephine Ballotta, Mary Sanfratello and Rosie Romano.
He is survived by his two daughters, Anita Scangarello
,
and Nancy Wegrzyniak and her husband Edward. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Jim attended Saint Paul's Parochial School in Clifton. He was inducted into the United States Army in December 1941. A veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant in the US army. He was initially deployed to Panama to guard the Panama Canal from 1941-1943 and he was subsequently deployed to Omaha Beach Head where he served in the Communication Division of the Signal Heavy Construction Battalion until the war ended in 1945.
Jim was employed as a construction foreman for greater than 40 years, working for Weny Brothers and Storm Company and then for Frank Link Construction Company before retiring in 1989.
Jim was a member of: The Laborer's International Union of North America, Local Union 3, the American Legion Post 8 of Clifton, NJ and he was honored to serve as Grand Marshall of the Clifton Veteran's Day Parade in 2014.
He was an active and founding member of the Clifton Dutch Hill Civic organization and had previously served as president of the organization.
He was a dedicated parishioner of Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Clifton where he served as an usher and altar server until 2016. He was also an active member of Saint Paul's Leisure Club.
Jim was a dedicated Yankee fan and enjoyed watching the New York giants. He enjoyed golfing with his best friend, Sal Carabello at the Passaic County Golf Club and most of all he loved the City of Clifton.
Funeral Friday 8:45 AM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, and 10 AM at St. Paul's RC Church, Clifton. Entombment, Calvary Cemetery, Paterson. Visiting Thursday 4-8 PM at the funeral home.
