Irene Grubow, a Passaic resident for many years, died after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 91. Irene was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1923 and lived through the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. She survived the siege of Leningrad, a forced labor camp, and the allied bombing of Germany during WW II. She came to the US in 1948, becoming a citizen in 1955. Her husband, Jaroslaw, died in 1970. Irene was employed in the Outpatient Department of St. Mary's Hospital, retiring in 1986 after 17years of service. She loved the Ballet and Opera, and enjoyed inviting friends to performances. She tried to show people beauty in a world that had shown her so much ugliness. Irene is survived by her son, Eugene, at home, by her daughter, Eilzabeth Kathman, of Covington, KY, and by two grandchildren. Stefan and Alexandra. Visitation on Thursday, April, 24, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Funeral Services will be at 10 AM on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Saints Kosma and Damian Russian Orthodox Church, 42 Van Buren St., Passaic. Interment will follow in Novo Diveevo Russian Orthodox Convent Cemetery, Spring Valley, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Cincinnati Opera in Irene's name would be greatly appreciated.
