H. Paul Varley, Jr.'s Obituary
H. Paul Varley, Jr., 84, of Woodland Park, passed away on December 15, 2015. Born in Paterson, he lived in Ridgewood, and Hawaii for 14 years, before moving to Woodland Park 9 years ago.
A US Army Veteran of the Korean War, Paul received a B.S Degree from Lehigh University in 1952, a M.A. Degree from Columbia University in 1961, and a PH. D, from Columbia University in 1964. Paul was Professor Emeritus of Japanese History, Department of East Asian Languages and Culture at Columbia University, NY, from 1965 to 1993. Later he was the Sen Soshitsu XV Professor of Japanese Cultural History, Department of History, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, retiring in 2008. In 1996 he received The Order of the Rising Star, Gold Rays with Rosette, from the Government of Japan.
Paul was a member of the Association for Asian Studies, the Japan Society, the Urasenke Tea Foundation, New York, Board of Directors, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, Board of Directors, and the Konnichi Kai of Hawaii.
Beloved husband of Betty Jane (Geiskopf) Varley. Devoted father of Sharyn Hennen and her husband Jim of West Milford, and the late Donna Lee Varley who passed away in March. Loving grandfather of Danielle Nace, Tracy Meredith, Collette Schwarts-Bartels, Bonnie Hennen and Erik Tronolone. Cherished great grandfather of Madison Meredith, Aidan, Emmagrace, Juiliana and Tyler Bartels, and Summer Tronolone. Dear brother of Richard M. of Miami, and the late Donald.
Memorial Gathering Saturday 2-4 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Prayer Service at 3 PM. Cremation was Private.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Humane Society, in memory of Paul, would be greatly appreciated.
