Obituary

Genevieve Generalli, 94, of Lakewood, NJ, died peacefully on February 23, 2021. Born in Newark, NJ to Rose and Victor Tamburr on January 22, 1927, Genevieve went on to live an extraordinary life. Genevieve was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from Montclair State Teachers College in 1949. Gen had an exceptional career as a public school teacher and received Teacher of the Year honors from the city of Clifton and county of Passaic. Well loved and respected as a teacher, she continued to keep in touch with many of her former students over the years, attending one of their weddings in Chicago when she was well into her 80s. After retiring from teaching at School 14, Gen continued to be a mentor for new teachers and became the curator of the historic Hamilton House Museum on Valley Road in Clifton where she gave school tours and offered various cultural events to the public.

Genevieve married Ernest Generalli, of Newark, in 1951 and lived in Passaic for 10 years before moving to Clifton to raise her family. She is survived by six children: Roseanne Burlingham Weigele of Cleveland, OH; Janet Generalli of Montclair, NJ; Julie Dominick of Boynton Beach, FL; Ernest Generalli of Chestnut Ridge, NY; Victoria Barris of Montclair, NJ; and Robert Generalli of Little Falls, NJ; as well as nine grandchildren, Scott Schabel, Julia Burlingham, Charlie Burlingham, Daniel Loxton, Jake Generalli, Mia Generalli (deceased 1994), Rose Tui Generalli, August Generalli and Victor Generalli, brother Victor Tamburr of Florida. Genevieve was predeceased by husband Ernest in 2000 and then her long time partner, Richard Davala early this year.

Genevieve and Richard lived in Lakewood NJ for the past 16 years. They had the opportunity to travel the world extensively before settling down in their 90s. Gen was an avid life long learner who took up writing, painting, singing and knitting in recent years.        Always vivacious, curious and energetic, Genevieve loved traveling, reading, word games and spending time with her family.

Funeral arrangements were private under the direction of Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton.

Friends and family are welcome to join us for a celebration of Gen's life and a memorial mass in the Spring.
