Florence (nee Semper) Benjamin, 93, resident of Lodi since 1987, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2022. Born and raised in Garfield, Florence was the youngest of seven children born to Polish immigrants Joseph and Mary (Baluckya) Semperkiewicz. After graduating Garfield High School in 1946, she went on to obtain a Bachelors Degree of Science in Education from the New Jersey State Teachers College at Paterson in 1950. After college, Florence started her career in the Lyndhurst School System where she taught elementary school for seven years. She then went on to the Emerson School System as a Learning Disability Consultant where she devoted her next 35 years before retiring in 1992.
As part of her teaching career, she was a member of the Bergen County Education Association, the NJEA, and the NEA.
Florence's career as a teacher afforded her opportunities to travel during the summer school breaks. Florence and her good friend Hope took those opportunities to travel to many exotic places around the world. Florence would love to speak to friends and family about her travel adventures and the many places she had visited.
Florence's connection to the Emerson teacher community would remain strong after her retirement. She cherished attending periodic luncheons with fellow retired teachers right up until her passing.
Florence also greatly cherished her lifelong connection with her church: the Saints Peter and Paul Polish National Church in Passaic. She was an enthusiastic member of the church's
Moniuszko Choir for many years where she sang, alongside her sisters Stephanie and Stella, for the entire church community for which she held so dear. Her faith and her church friends would remain a stronghold for her throughout her life.
Although not having her own children, Florence developed a close relationship with her nieces, nephews, and their families. She greatly enjoyed family gatherings to celebrate holidays, birthdays, graduations, etc. She always loved a party. Her sunny disposition and gracious attitude always made her a welcome guest. She was a big fan of jokes and would usually tell a joke or two at the family gatherings. She was also enthusiastic about sports and the arts. She was an avid fan of the New York sport teams including the Yankees and the Giants. Attending the opera in NYC was one of her great passions.
As Florence aged, she would always tell everyone she knew "never get old". Although Florence got old with age, she never got old with her spirit for life. She will be missed.
Florence was predeceased by
all three sisters Genevieve Gbur, Stephanie Lados, Stella Servas, along with their spouses Andrew Gbur, John Lados and John Servas. She was also predeceased by all three brothers Alexander Semper, Theodore Semper, William Semper and William's wife Bertha. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Doris Semper and Jen Semper along with many nieces, nephews, and their children who loved her very much.
