Obituary

Charles "Gus" Routsis, 90, of Wayne, formerly of Totowa, died on December 5, 2012 having lived a long, healthy and abundant life. He is predeceased by his wife Stella, who passed away in 2008. Gus was born on August 24, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA but moved to his family's native Greece when he was two-years-old. At the tender age of 16, he made the voyage back to the US all by himself so that he could provide for his family. Gus served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in New Guinea. He married Stella (Skunakis), a Staten Island farm girl, in 1948 and they moved to Brooklyn, NY, and then to New Jersey. It was Stella who came up with the nickname "Gus" because there had been a horse on the farm named "Charles" and she refused to call her husband by an animal's name. After marrying Stella, Gus became a milkman for Lotz Brothers Dairy in Clifton, where he worked for 35 years, before retiring in 1984. After retirement, Gus started up a messenger service which kept him busy and out of Stella's hair. He was an active parishioner and past board member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Clifton, as well as a Masonic Lodge Member of Clifton Lodge #203. Surviving are his daughters, Jeanne Fakis and her husband John of East Lyme, CT; Anne Routsis of Totowa; Georgia (Gigi) Routsis Savas and her husband Damon of N. Topsail Beach, NC; and grandson Nicholas Fakis and wife Delia of Overland Park, KS. The family wishes to thank the staff at Preakness Healthcare Center in Wayne for their TLC over the past year. As Gus was a big dog lover, in lieu of flowers, donations made to Eleventh Hour Rescue, PO Box 218, Rockaway, NJ 07866, in his memory would be greatly appreciated. Funeral Saturday 11:30 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 818 Valley Road, Clifton. Entombment, Calvary Cemetery, Paterson. Visiting Saturday 10:30-11:30 AM at the church. Arrangements under the direction of Shook Funeral Home, Clifton.
