Antonia Hernandez, 86, of Clifton passed away on April 11, 2026. Born in Las Marias, Puerto Rico, she traveled to the US in 1961 and first lived in Paterson before settling in Clifton 15 years ago.

Antonia was considered by family and friends to be a matriarch filled with love- a guardian of the family tree. She did not only care for multiple generations of family members and children, but she also carefully watered and tended to the young hearts of anyone who crossed her path to ensure that they blossomed with strength and kindness.

Antonia treated her kitchen as a restaurant to all, she warmed people's hearts and stomachs with her soups, rice, empanadas, and was known to have a particularly heavy hand when it came to adding rum into her coquito.  Outside of her artistry in the kitchen, Antonia was also known for being a formidable and competitive opponent at the Domino table, starting her matches by asking her opponents if they "wanted to cry today". Her joy came from playing with her friends, leaving a smile on their faces. However, nothing beat the smile on hers when she inevitably beat them, keeping her championship title in her hands.

Beloved wife of the late Carlos D. Hernandez. Devoted mother of Marybel Hernandez and her wife Blanca Velasquez, Carlos Hernandez and his wife Jayne. Loving grandmother of VonMarie Hernandez, Bianca Yakimik- Hernandez and her husband Salvatore, Justyn Cruz and his wife Hailey, Brandon R. Kelly and Matthew C. Kelly. Cherished great-grandmother of AlinaMarie and Richard Rodriguez, Delilah Cruz, Braydon, Jaxson, and Leila Linca. Loving sister of Teresa, Porfiria, and Zenaida Rivera, and the late Josefina Rosado, Palmira and Altagracia Rivera. Dear sister-in-law of Sonia Rios, Emma Hernandez and Geraldino Gonzalez. Beloved aunt of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visiting Wednesday, April 15, 4 – 8 PM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Funeral Service Thursday, April 16, 10 AM at the Funeral Home. Interment, Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa.

Antonia Hernández, de 86 años y residente de Clifton, falleció el 11 de abril de 2026. Nacida en Las Marías, Puerto Rico, viajó a los Estados Unidos en 1961 y vivió en Paterson antes de establecerse en Clifton hace 15 años.

Antonia era considerada por su familia y amigos como una matriarca llena de amor, una guardiana del árbol familiar. No solo cuidaba de múltiples generaciones de miembros de la familia y niños, sino que también regaba y atendía con esmero los corazones jóvenes de cualquiera que cruzara su camino, asegurándose de que florecieran con fuerza y amabilidad.
Antonia trataba su cocina como un restaurante para todos; calentaba los corazones y estómagos de las personas con sus sopas, arroz, empanadas, y era conocida por tener una mano especialmente generosa cuando se trataba de añadir ron a su coquito. Fuera de su destreza en la cocina, Antonia también era conocida por ser una oponente formidable y competitiva en la mesa de dominó, comenzando sus partidas preguntando a sus contrincantes si "querían llorar hoy". Su alegría venía de jugar con sus amigos, dejando una sonrisa en sus rostros. Sin embargo, nada superaba la sonrisa en el suyo cuando inevitablemente los vencía, manteniendo su título de campeona en sus manos.

Amada esposa del difunto Carlos D. Hernández. Madre devota de Marybel Hernández y su esposa Blanca Velásquez, y de Carlos Hernández y su esposa Jayne. Abuela cariñosa de VonMarie Hernández, Bianca Yakimik- Hernández y su esposo Salvatore, Justyn Cruz y su esposa Hailey, Brandon R. Kelly y Matthew C. Kelly. Querida bisabuela de AlinaMarie y Richard Rodríguez, Delilah Cruz, y Braydon, Jaxson y Leila Linca. Amada hermana de Teresa, Porfiria y Zenaida Rivera, y de las difuntas Josefina Rosado, Palmira y Altagracia Rivera. Estimada cuñada de Sonia Ríos, Emma Hernández y Geraldino González. Velorio el miércoles, 15 de abril, de 4 a 8 PM, en la Funeraria Shook, ubicada en 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Servicio Fúnebre el Jueves, 16 de abril, a las 10 AM, en la funeraria. El Entierro será en el Cementerio Laurel Grove, ubicado en Totowa.
