Anthony A. "Tony" Saffioti, 82, of Clifton, passed away on June 27, 2016. Born in Clifton, he was a lifelong resident.
A parishioner of St. John Kanty RC Church, Clifton, Tony retired in 1995 as the Superintendent of the Department of Public Works for the City of Clifton, where he worked for 30 years. As Superintendent, Tony was instrumental in pioneering the Recycling Program, was the President of the Clifton Supervisors Association, and served on the Advisory Committee. He was a dedicated community leader and took great pride in his role as a caretaker of the City that he loved.
A US Army Veteran, Tony was a member and Past Commander of the Athenia Veterans Post, was a member of the Clifton Elks Lodge #1569, and served as Past Vice President of the Athenia Business Association.
In the spirit of continuing the family tradition, Tony became an avid farmer and cook. He found great joy in spending time on the farm with his grandchildren, and sharing his bounty with family, friends, and the entire community. Tony owned and operated the Athenia Washarama for many years. In addition, he was a mason, builder, heavy equipment operator and property owner.
Beloved husband for 55 years of Nancy (Anderson). Devoted father of Mary Jean "Maggie" Landowski, Kathleen Popek and her husband David, Patricia Harvey and her husband David. Loving grandfather of Anthony & Brie, Paul and his wife Amanda, Scott, Michael and his wife Leigh, Adam and his wife Ashley, Joseph, and Bridget. Cherished great grandfather of David Michael, Brooklyn Rose, and Mischka Irene. Dear brother of Tom and his wife Honey, Donald and his wife Geri, and John and his wife Marilyn. He is predeceased by brothers Frank and Joseph.
Funeral Friday 8:45 am at the Shook Funeral Home 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, and 10 am at St. John Kanty RC Church, Clifton, Interment, Calvary Cemetery, Paterson. Visiting Thursday 1-4 and 6-9 at the funeral home.
